FORT HOOD, Texas – Soldiers and family members of 15th Special Troops Battalion, 15th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command celebrated their battalion's birthday at Belton Lake, Aug. 21, 2008, with sport tournaments, food, a live band, and cake.

The day started with a "fun run" on Fort Hood which included Soldiers, family members, and their dogs and progressed to Belton Lake where participants enjoyed volleyball, basketball, horse shoes, tug of war, bean bag toss, and listen to a rock band of Soldiers known as Reloaded.

"[We came out] just to have fun over here," Pfc. Cindy McClay of Plainfield, N.J., an 81st Adjutant General [Postal] postal clerk said.

"It's nice hanging out with sergeants when they're not in uniform."

The Soldiers weren't the only ones enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

Lt. Col. Paula Lodi, the battalion's commander and Franklin, Mass. native, awarded a battalion coin to Payton Marcelle, 4, son of Spc. Scott Marcelle, an Alexandria, La. native, for successfully calling out orders to the battalion's entire morning formation.

"It's good to give [Soldiers] a day that they can spend with their families and each other in camaraderie...it just builds esprit de corps in the unit," Lodi explained.

"I think it's great for morale," Pfc. Mercedes Stripling, 81st AG postal clerk said of the event while watching a tug of war competition.

"You see a lot of people together cheering like it's an Olympic event but it's just a bunch of people having fun."

Adding to the fun atmosphere was the live music of Reloaded, a 90's alternative rock band consisting of four Soldiers, including the 15th's own Waterford, Vt. native, Capt. Estan Davis, 15th SB's training officer on guitar. He was joined by Seattle, Wash. native, Capt. Brett Bartell, on bass guitar, singer Cpl. Eric Perez of Beaumont, Texas, and Sgt. John Stewart of Dallas on drums, all from 1st Cavalry Division.

The band started with three members playing together in Iraq and only two months ago picked up a fourth member and a name.
