Marines with 8th Engineer Support Battalion constructed a partitioning wall in support of the Priority Engineer Project List at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 20-29, 2017.
The PEPL is comprised of projects submitted to a board at headquarters to be approved. It was used in Afghanistan to take on engineer projects in a combat space and is now being implemented back in garrison to keep the useful information fresh in the Marines’ minds.
“We set up a wood frame, put up drywall, secured the cracks with putty and tape, then sanded it down and painted the finished product,” said Cpl. Weston Jordan, acting guide with 8th ESB.
The partitioning wall was built in the headquarters building to secure a Secret Internet Protocol Router Network server from being used by non-essential personnel.
“The partition needed to be a complete wall to keep the network classified and ensure no one was able to get in through a crawl space,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Richard Thomas, engineer chief for 8th ESB.
Another reason Marines were tasked to complete the divider was to show that they are capable of completing tasks uncommon for their job and to teach the junior Marines new skills.
“We have quite a few new Marines in our shop and they haven’t gotten to work with certain materials,” said Jordan. “It gives the older Marines a chance to mentor them and build a bond.”
The engineers were able to save Marine Corps Installations East $2,500 in labor and materials instead of hiring contractors.
“It’s a great opportunity to show everyone what Marine Corps engineers are capable of and promote unit cohesion,” said Thomas.
