Use of military IDs not authorized for commercial gain

The Department of Defense currently prohibits personnel from using a military ID to gain base access when doing so for personal or commercial gain.

Airmen, dependents, retirees and other military ID holders employed with a company that delivers or provides services on base must submit a credential request through their supervisor or authorized sponsor if the company has already been assigned one.

“First and foremost we must acknowledge that the ID belongs to the government, not the individual,” said Joe Tripp, 22nd Security Forces Squadron pass and registration supervisor. “The use of identification issued by the DOD is covered in a multitude of directives, instructions and United States Code (Federal Law). Personal commercial venture is not a privilege provisioned for these cards.”

Tripp also emphasized the importance of properly using and safeguarding military ID cards.

“Your IDs are much like your passwords, cellphones and personal computers; very valuable and highly vulnerable,” he said. “It must be protected as it does have a great deal of information on it. Protect your information and in a larger construct, you’re protecting those around you and the mission itself.”
