Are you prepared for natural disasters? This April Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is participating in America’s PrepareAthon! which is a national community-based campaign that moves individuals from awareness to action by preparing for relevant hazards.

Stay tuned this month for continuing information on keeping your family safe during inclement weather. This week focuses on tornadoes which can and will cross rivers and bodies of water.

In the event of a tornado the MCB Camp Lejeune All Hazards Emergency Preparedness Guide advises residents to shut all windows and doors. Turn off all air handling equipment and go to a pre-determined sheltering room. Seal any windows and vents with sheets of plastic and duct tape. After turning on a TV or radio, and all that’s left is to wait for further instructions or an all clear from emergency services.

Shelter kits should consist of plastic sheeting to cover any windows or vents in the sheltering area and duct tape to secure the plastic sheeting. A battery operated radio along with fresh batteries is handy in case of a power outage so the all clear can be heard. A flash light, bottled water and a first aid kit are also good things to have in emergencies.

If a person is outdoors when a tornado is present, www.ready.gov says to take cover in a stationary vehicle, put the seat belt on and cover your head with your arms and a blanket, coat or other cushion if possible. If there is nothing around you, lie in an area noticeably lower than the level of the roadway and cover your head with your arms.

The Emergency Preparedness Guide encourages others to learn more about how to stay safe during emergency situations and share that information with others. There are differences between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. A tornado watch means the conditions are right for a tornado to develop. A tornado warning means one has been sighted and you should seek shelter.
