The 193rd Special Operations Wing, Middletown, Pennsylvania is committed to building better leaders throughout the organization. March 17-19, 2017, the 193rd SOW held their annual Leadership Development Program.
Over the course of three days, 193rd SOW Airmen learned written communication, verbal communication, progression of Airmen and day-to-day leadership skills, along with going through a Four Lenses course; giving them tools to be better leaders in today’s Air National Guard.
Chief Master Sergeant Roger Burke, 193rd Special Operations Logistics Squadron superintendent said, “I think the LDP is an opportunity for airmen to learn more about their craft, provide them more tools to lead their folks, to develop themselves.”
The program formerly known as the Noncommissioned Leadership Course has been in existence for about 15 years. A few years ago, Burke and Chief Master Sgts. Patrick Devine, William Lengner, Mark Frey, and Antonio Powell revamped the LDP. Adapting to Airmen’s needs helped them put together a course to produce more effective leaders. “We felt like we needed to continue to adapt to the needs of the Airmen,” said Burke.
Master Sgt. Micah Good, 211th Engineering Installation Squadron first sergeant said, “I took the old NLC in 2008. The program is completely different from what I took and seems to be less of a checked box to more of a value added expansion of an NCO's tool box.”
Good who helped teach the verbal communication block, which contained continuum of discipline, communication and counseling, said he volunteered to help out with the course this year because he saw the practical application of the skills learned in program from several noncommissioned officers in his squadron. “When I see a program getting positive results it motivates me to get involved,” said Good.
Tech. Sgt Joanna Blackburn, 193rd SOLRS general supply specialist, who took the course for the first time, said the most valuable thing from the course was how to apply what they learned. “We were able to actually practice doing all of the stuff we learned in class,” Blackburn said.
Blackburn continued to say, “I would recommend this course to other Airman because the information is relevant, the classes are interactive, and the material can be used at any level.”
If you stop learning, stop developing yourself, then you become stagnate, essentially the same person each year,” said Burke.
Good said, “I think the LDP is an important tool in honing top notch NCO's. It expands on, or previews lessons taught in Airman Leadership School. The program has fine-tuned the generic Professional Military Education and brought it home with Wing specifics.”
193rd SOW is committed to building a better tomorrow, by providing the necessary tools needed for today.
