JA is a non-profit youth organization that works with local businesses and organizations to teach students in grades K through 12 about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.

NAVSTA Sailors spent their day in classrooms teaching and connecting with students in grades K-5.

“I really enjoyed being in the classroom atmosphere,” said Aviation Support Equipment Technician 2nd Class Anna Brownlee. “They were initially shy, but they warmed up to me. By the end, they didn’t want me to leave.”

Volunteers are provided with bags of tools and instructions for games to get students involved and teach them the concepts.

“We did activities with them in a way that made it more fun and more interesting to them,” said Yeoman Seaman Atiyanna Jackson. “We played our own version of ‘Head’s Up!’ where students guessed different occupations and the kids loved it!”

Brownlee stated that her 4th grade class enjoyed a game where the students were entrepreneurs themselves.

“Each student was an owner of a hot dog stand,” said Brownlee. “The game showed them how to purchase materials they would need, how to set selling prices, and helped them understand the difference between profit and loss.”

JA’s goal is to help students realize that their education today is setting them up for a bright future.

“JA is a great opportunity for students,” said Brownlee. “It gives them a different outlook for their future. When I was a kid I remember people always asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up. JA answers that question and encourages students to work hard and someday create a business for themselves.”

While it’s a great opportunity for children to learn about important aspects of their future, it is also beneficial to volunteers.

“It’s always rewarding to give back,” said Jackson. “I remember when I was a kid and JA volunteers would come in and spend the day with us. It made a good impact on me and my peers.”

Jackson stated that the best part of her day was connecting with students and making a positive impact.

“When we were leaving the classroom the students wanted to give us hugs,” said Jackson. “They kept asking if we would be back tomorrow. It’s extremely rewarding to know that I made the same impact that other volunteers did when I was younger.”
