Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) celebrated Certified Nurses Day by honoring the dedication and care-enhancing efforts of board certified nurses on March 20, 2017.
The celebration included a cake-cutting and speech by the Director of Nursing Services for the hospital emphasizing the hard work and dedication by the nurses.
“Today’s celebration recognizes the dedication of individual registered nurses (RN) who choose to demonstrate their excellence by obtaining board certification related to their sub-specialty of nursing,” said Capt. Amy McBride, NHB Director of Nursing Services from Harwich, Mass.
Currently, Lt. Cmdr. Jessica Robinson holds the most certifications at NHB with five. Robinson leads 76 nurses in certifications providing enhanced patient care and services in multiple nursing specialties.
April Ritter, a Nurse Case Manager, went above her specialty’s minimum requirement to become board certified stating, “As case managers, we are required to be certified, but I also became board certified in case management as I believe it shows that I am committed to my specialty in nursing.”
“All registered nurses (RN) have entry-level RN license, but those who wish to specialize in a particular field of focus can volunteer for board certification,” said McBride. “With more than 300 different fields to choose from, by pursuing and earning certification it shows they have the knowledge to provide quality patient care in that sub-specialty.”
While board certification at NHB is not a requirement, leadership encourages all eligible nurses to seek specialty certification.
When asked by fellow nurses looking to start the certification process, Ritter encourages them to, “Go for it! Being certified shows your commitment to your specialty and shows you to be an expert in that specialty.”
The more than 300 specialties include oncology, hospice care, medical-surgical, pediatric, ambulatory care, pain management, cardio vascular, neonatal intensive care, gastroenterology, post anesthesia care, family nursing, in addition to many more. Once the certification is achieved it must be renewed every two to three years.
Certified Nurses Day is March 19, chosen to honor the birthday of Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles, Doctor of Education, Registered Nurse and Fellow of the American Academy Nursing.
