SAN ANTONIO -- Sailors from Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) participate in an ongoing volunteer Meals on Wheels program every Tuesday, delivering food to senior citizens in the San Antonio community.
NMTSC has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels and building a growing relationship with the senior citizens at the Midcrown Apartment Complex for more than three years.
"I think it is a great opportunity to break away from your normal routine and give back to the local community," Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Steven Eleter said about volunteering with Meals on Wheels. "I love it, and we are planning to continue doing this at least twice a week!"
The hour-long routine starts with preparing assigned meals for the senior citizens, placing them in individual carry bags, and then transporting them to each door they are assigned.
"This is a retirement community, and a lot of the citizens have disabilities," explained Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Rodriana Edwards, NMTSC Meals on Wheels coordinator. "So this is a great opportunity to assist, and we normally get a great reaction from the seniors here."
“NMTSC is dedicated to helping out wherever needed,” Eletar said. “The Meals on Wheels program has been a successful way of providing a volunteer avenue for Sailors to assist and leave a lasting impression on San Antonio and the local community.”
