Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and U.S. Air Force Maj. Brenda Franklin, 97th Security Forces Squadron commander, spoke at the event and highlighted the contributions of women in the workplace.

“Women have certainly earned their mark and their right to serve in tremendous leadership capacities that protect our nation,” said Fallin. “Air Force bases like Altus have been able to demonstrate an inclusive culture that allows women the opportunity to dream big and become a great contribution to the success of the Air Force’s mission.”

Not only did the speakers convey the significance of women’s history month, but those behind the scenes helped to further that goal as well. One of the people who put together this event was Pamela Walsh, 97th Communications Squadron government information specialist.

“This year’s theme is ‘Trailblazers in business and labor’,” said Walsh. “I thought that I would be a good representative for this event and to take what others from my generation have learned and pass that information on to the younger generations. This is a way to thank the people who paved the path to where we are today.”

The event allowed the guest speakers to educate the base populace about WHM and with this new knowledge helped connect past and present women in the workforce.

“Until I started planning this event, I wasn’t too familiar with WHM,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Kellar, 97th Force Support Squadron NCO in charge of career development. “For me this was an eye opener to progress of how far women have made it in the workforce. The largest thing to take away from this event would be informing the base about what WHM is truly about.”

Franklin had some words of advice for those in the audience about being a trailblazer.

“Trailblazers are sometimes behind the scenes,” said Franklin. “Raising and empowering the strong and successful women you see in the world today. My message is to be motivated by the true trailblazers in life. To learn from their struggles and triumphs no matter how big or small. Focus on what’s important and what motives you no matter what the obstacles are like being a women, having a family, getting injured, getting sick or whatever the perceived barrier is. Push through it and cease the opportunity to learn from it and to teach others.”
