Service members from Kirtland reached out to the local community to share insight on the Air Force and their personal perspectives on what it is like to serve in the military.

Staff Sgt. Cali Anthony, Military Personnel Section’s NCOIC of Relocations, visited Grant Middle School during a career and college fair Feb. 21 in hopes of inspiring students to consider a military career.

The fair hosted representatives from trade schools, colleges, and different branches of the military. Representatives answered questions from sixth through eighth graders, with the goal of highlighting different career opportunities and encouraging students to get actively involved in planning their futures.

Adri’an Dickson, an eighth grader at Grant, asked Anthony about her starting salary, what she liked best and least about the Air Force, and how she made the decision to enlist.

“I learned that you can join (the military) with just a high school diploma.” Adri’an said. “The uniform is pretty cool too.”

Anthony hopes being in uniform at these type of public events it will get children and young adults thinking about their futures and considering joining the Air Force.

“They aren’t much younger than I was (when I joined),” Anthony said. “They should start (planning) early and keep their options open. I think some people make up their mind earlier versus later. So if we can instill this idea at a younger age, hopefully that will stick with them through high school.”
