Team Dover hosted the Hiring Our Heroes Military Transition Summit here March 15-17, 2017.

This inaugural three-day event was open to all currently serving service members, veterans and military spouse, and brought together more than 100 employers. It also featured personal branding, a hiring fair, transition education and industry workshops.

“It was very successful,” said Laura Kantor-Chupp, First State Community Partnership manager.

It is estimated that the job fair saw more than 400 prospective employees, while the industry briefs drew a crowd of 200.

“We hit and exceed all of our number goals,” said 1st Lt. Daniel Sloss, 436th Mission Support Group executive officer. “At the beginning of the planning process, we set pretty lofty goals for participation. We broke that in every single category. It was successful.”

Transitioning out of the military is often a stressful time for that member.

“It’s a huge transition in my life,” said Senior Airman Michael Connors, 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs broadcast journalist. “I’m may be unemployed, but coming here today, there are so many employees looking to hire veterans. The skillsets and intangibles that we bring to the table are things they’re looking to put into their company.”

Connors, who attended all three days of the summit, has decided to separate from the Air Force after completing his six-year enlistment requirement.

“The biggest thing that I took away from this is there are some employers, where with my skillset, I didn’t think they had anything for me,” said Connors. “But when I got speaking one-on-one, like Lockheed Martin and Hilton, they have job openings with their corporate headquarters that fit right in with what I’m looking for.”

Overall, Connors described the event as being very beneficial.

“It’s helped me relax a little bit,” he said. “I’m no longer nervous about separating as I was a few days ago.”

Another attendee of the summit, Tech. Sgt. Miranda Mal, 436th Civil Engineer Squadron installation emergency manager, described the event as mind-opening.

“For me, it was a pretty good opportunity,” she said. “I think a lot of people tend to wait until they’re at their separation or retirement before they really think about it.”

For times when there is no transition summit on base, transitioning military members still have options.

“If they have any kind of transition concerns, call the Airman and Family Readiness Center and speak to one of my counselors,” said Sue Holliday, AFRC director. “We are the resource and venue for support for transitioning members.

Regionally, the next summit will take place at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, on June 7 to 8, 2017. For more information: www.uschamberfoundation.org/event/joint-base-mcguire-dix-lakehurst-transition-summit-0.
