The 548th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion cased its colors in preparation for an upcoming deployment during a ceremony at Fort Drum’s Magrath Sports Complex on March 22.

The battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment will deploy to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield, where it will provide logistical support to warfighters in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Today the colors of the 548th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion have been cased in preparation for yet another deployment in the theater of operations to, once again, do what the nation has asked,” said Col. Shawn Schuldt, commander of the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Sustainment Brigade.

“Today’s ceremony is about the symbolic action as the unit cases these colors in preparation of support of combat arms operations, because it is the colors that represent the unit, its history,” he said. “Those colors represent all the Soldiers who have come before and all the Sword Soldiers who will come after.”

Though, as Schuldt said, this may be an anxious time for many Soldiers, especially those preparing for their first deployment, he offered words of assurance and confidence to the formation.

“You are ready for any mission, any circumstance,” he said. “You understand the importance of supporting the operations, and you know how important it is to continue the proud lineage of this great unit. You will represent this battalion well.”

Following Schuldt’s speech, 548th CSSB’s Executive Officer Maj. Thomas Pfarr took the podium. The unit’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. Douglas Thompson, was unable to attend the ceremony, but will return from emergency leave in time to deploy with the unit.

“Today is a significant event for us all,” Pfarr said. “Although we case the colors of the 548th to deploy our Headquarters to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield and Inherent Resolve, we still maintain our legacy of sustaining support to the Division.”

“I affirm to you with no doubt that this Headquarters is ready for its mission,” Pfarr said, citing the battalion’s multiple training operations and day-to-day missions. “There has been no situation this battalion has been challenged with that it has not overcome and achieved success,” he said.

Pfarr quoted the renowned Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu, who said that the line between disorder and order lies in logistics, as he expressed his confidence in the unit’s readiness and ability to provide logistics support and therefore, order, to troops deployed in the Central Command area of operation.

“As we case the colors here today, we look forward to unfurling them once again in Kuwait as we assume the Spartan Shield mission and become Task Force Sword, and begin the next chapter in the history of 548th CSSB,” Pfarr said. “I am confident you will do your duty to achieve mission success and rise to the challenges put in front of us, and we look forward to return upon successful completion of our mission.”
