ADAZI, Latvia — Company A., 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, began their first squad movement drill March 19 on Adazi Military Base.
The two M1A2 main battle tanks focused on engagement area and fire distribution.
The exercise allowed tank commanders to control a section of armor and focus on defensive operations transitioning rapidly into offensive operations, said Lt. Col. Stephen Capehart, battalion commander for 1st Bn., 68th Armor Reg., 4th Inf. Div.
The 1st Bn., 68th Armor Reg. is deployed to Latvia for Operation Atlantic Resolve, a U.S. led effort in Eastern Europe, to ensure peace and stability in the region.
After returning from scouting the area before the live-fire exercise, the vehicles were staged and the unit then maneuvered through the range.
The range was scattered with trees, large puddles of water from the previous day's rain and uneven ground.
"We're adjusting to the water table which allows us to be able to find the right battle positions and also the right avenues of approach," Capehart said. "It's actually been fantastic, we've been able to achieve all of our training objectives."
For the next two weeks, section level movement will be the focus of training.
Training will escalate from squad to platoon level, and then work up to company and battalion, said Capt. David Choi, the fires support officer for 1st Bn., 68th Armor Reg.
The exercises will develop combat training and will prepare Soldiers for our validation exercise at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, said Choi.
Lt. Col. Capehart expressed his gratitude for the Latvian forces and the use of their land.
"I think what I enjoy the most out of this is the complete interoperability aspect with the Latvian Land Forces, " Capehart said. "Everything that we do, whether its training meetings or training out in the field, everything is together; which I think is just a fantastic approach to everything we do."
