PHOENIX – Attaining the highest possible score on college entrance exams or the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, is the goal for prospective Arizona students seeking to attend college or join the military.

A tool in assisting people pursuing these goals in the March2Success program, which helps students become more adept at testing.

It helps students become more proficient, not only with the ASVAB, but other standardized tests, said Regan Mendina-Pellow, education services officer, Phoenix Recruiting Battalion.

“March2Success is a website that helps students become familiar with these tests,” Pellow said. “There are a variety of things involved with the program, but the key goal is to help them become more comfortable testing.”

Some of the units March2Sucess uses in its program focus on subject matter, so there’s quite a big emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives, Pellow said.

“For them to be successful, students need exposure to it on a regular and scheduled basis,” she said. “That’s something they can look at and become more efficient at and hopefully learn something from.”

Another key aspect of March2Success is the American College Testing (ACT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) units that prepare students for those particular exams, Pellow said.

“It can really have a big impact on students in their last year of high school as they prepare to go to college,” Pellow explained. “Their scores determine what kind of scholarships they’re going to get.”

Pellow said the program involves includes interactive lessons, quizzes and practice tests, with each test scaled to mirror its real-life counterpart, either the SAT or ASVAB. The scores are also scaled using the same methods as those tests.

In order for a student to participate in March2Success they have to be 13 years or older, Pellow said, with students simply needing a sign-in name and password with the option of whether or not they want to be contacted by a recruiter.

“That obviously doesn’t apply for the younger students, but for the older ones and their educators it’s something they can opt out of,” Pellow continued. “It’s the only requirement.”

Pellow said there hasn’t been any formal assessment done to see if students’ scores have increased due to March2Success, but she has seen individual scores improve on a personal basis.

“Once they use the program they can increase their scores by 15-20 points, especially in regards to the ASVAB,” she explained. “It’s becoming an important ingredient in education.”

March2Success is a gift from the Army to education and intended to benefit all students, Pellow said.

“Part of this may be a career in the military, but that’s only one choice as far as an occupation goes,” Pellow added. “So if they’re doing well and taking standardized tests, they’re going to excel in those and improve their scores.”

Pellow said it’s her job to take the message to the schools and educate them on March2Success, which is part of her duties as an education officer.

“When students are going to take the ASVAB is when they really want to improve their score and boost it up,” she said. “That’s when I tell them about March2Success and how it helps them improve their chances in their desired career field.”

The program is an excellent resource and tool, based on the individual, which they can use on their own or in the classroom, Pellow said.

“The educator is able to follow their students’ progress along throughout their units,” Pellow said. “These are full-length measures of coursework that can be used to excel in any area they like.”
