Scott Legal Office best in Air Mobility Command

Story by Senior Airman Melissa Estevez

    375th Air Mobility Wing

The 375th Air Mobility Wing Legal Office has earned recognition with the 2016 Air Mobility Command Legal Office of the Year award.

The award is a year-long evaluation process that gauges every facet of legal operations, from military justice to legal assistance for Airmen, family members and retirees.

“This year [we] provided world-class legal services to over 4,000 clients at Scott AFB, producing an astonishing 7,100 legal documents such as wills, power of attorneys and other documents, the most in AMC,” explained Lt. Col. Kevin Catron, 375th AMW Judge Advocate.

These efforts saved the community nearly $1 million in legal fees that the members would otherwise have had to pay in the civilian community. Through innovative programs, such as a Remote Legal Assistance program, they expanded their legal assistance and services to an additional 4,000 Airmen assigned to 19 Geographically Separated Units from California to New Jersey.

For instance, the attorneys traveled to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to provide services for members of the 19th Air Support Operations Squadron to ensure they were deployment ready.

“I couldn’t be happier for this team; they worked exceedingly hard this year,” said Catron. “As a group, we decided [winning the 2016 AMC Legal Office of the Year Award] was our yearly goal. There are much larger wings in AMC doing amazing things for our Air Force, so to be recognized as the best in 2016 is an honor.”

Catron said the legal office embodies the 375th AMW commander’s priorities, including innovation, excellence, and communication. Every member, enlisted and officer, played an integral and equal part of their success. He said they’ve made innovation a part of their ethos and this might be the only agency in the wing that allows an Airman to discuss complex issues with a group commander.

“I’m most proud of the fact that this was a year-long process, rather than a last minute [award] submission; this team mapped out their road to success and achieved it,” said Catron.

By coordinating with their commanders and first sergeants, their military justice processing times for Article 15s and administrative discharges were the best in the command, ensuring the Airmen received “Firm, Fair, and Fast” military discipline. This allowed their members to remain mission ready and mission focused, said Catron.

Winning the award was accomplished through additional innovations, such as creating an electronic whiteboard, which provides real time data on processing goals and an electronic processing system, allowing for parallel processing of discipline actions. This shaved upwards of 61percent off their processing times.

Tech. Sgt. Timothy Galloway, Military Justice NCO in charge, said, “I'm lucky to be in a position where we have talented and motivated professionals.”

Capt. Deepa Patel, added, “This award is a recognition of the hard work that our stellar team puts in every day. It's an opportunity for us to showcase our innovation and commitment to excellence in everything that we do.”
