ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE BASE PEARCE, Australia (Mar. 6, 2017) –A detachment of Patrol Squadron Ten (VP-10) “Red Lancers” flew to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Pearce to participate in Exercise Ocean Explorer 2017 (OE17) and the Royal Navy Submarine Command Course (SMCC) from Feb. 25 to Mar. 6.
OE17 is a major fleet training activity led by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and jointly enabled by the RAAF and other nations’ forces. It is designed to test warfighting capabilities in the maritime domain, specifically sea control operations. The Red Lancer Combat Aircrew Four (CAC-4) was lucky enough to partake in this exercise and work with both the RAN and RAAF.
“Large-scale joint exercises such as Ocean Explorer enable the Australian and U.S. militaries to work together in challenging maritime scenarios,” explained Lt. Joshua Cohen, Mission Commander of CAC-4. “They help build and maintain strong relationships and allow us to maintain critical interoperability between forces.”
CAC-4 also demonstrated the advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities of the P-8A while searching for a submarine during the SMCC. During this ASW exercise, they had several Collins-class submariners join them on a flight. This allowed the submariners to see the ASW techniques and capabilities of the P-8A while sharing submarine evasion tactics.
Lt. Brian Young, the Patrol Plane Commander of CAC-4 described his experience with RAN submariner riders, “The submariners’ insight provided a tactical advantage for maintaining contact and gave us a better comprehension and predictive ability for the movements of the submarine. It was great to learn from the vast experience of the RAN submariners and we will be able to use the knowledge we gained during future ASW scenarios.”
The Red Lancers are based out of Jacksonville, Florida, and are currently on a six-month deployment in support of U.S. 7th Fleet. This exercise was one of many bilateral events that VP-10 has participated in throughout its deployment. Training conducted at these events helps to strengthen interoperability between forces, enhances alliances and strengthens theater security cooperation.
