Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Kelsey Adams

    Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet

PACIFIC OCEAN—Operations Specialist 3rd Class Marissa Dixon, from Sacramento, California, was announced as Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) motivator of the week, Feb. 5.

Dixon was selected as Wayne E. Meyer’s motivator of the week for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4th for her outstanding work performance while underway during the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group’s Western Pacific Deployment.

“Her superior performance in Combat Information Systems Department earned her much recognition from our destroyer squadron’s deputy commodore,” said Cmdr. Vincent A. Fortson, commanding officer of Wayne E. Meyer. “Dixon is a committed and motivated team player within her division.”

Fortson said he believes Dixon has proven herself to be operating at a level above her rank.

“As a third class petty officer, she stands watch in our combat information center as a tactical information coordinator (TIC), a position commonly filled by more senior enlisted Sailors,” said Fortson. “She is responsible for managing the complex tactical data picture in our strike group’s battle space. As TIC, she is in charge of identifying and classifying all surface and air contacts within our ship’s area of responsibility.”

Dixon said her passion for helping her division is what drives her to do her best.

“I’ve come a long way from when I first joined the Navy,” said Dixon. “When I first came to the Wayne E. Meyer, I was content to let other people take charge and do things, but now I love to step in and help my division in any way that I can. Knowing that maybe something I do is helping make someone grow as a Sailor is all the motivation I need to keep doing what I am doing.”

Dixon graduated from Notomas High School in 2013 and joined the U.S. Navy in June 2014.
Wayne E. Meyer is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment with the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet into the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific regularly and routinely for more than 70 years and will continue to do so. Carl Vinson has deployed to the region several times, starting with a deployment to the Western Pacific in 1983 a year after commissioning. Most recently in 2015, Vinson conducted port visits and exercises with regional navies in the South China Sea.

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.

This deployment is Wayne E. Meyer’s third deployment to the Western Pacific since being commissioned Oct. 10, 2009, in Philadelphia.

The ship received its name from the late Rear Adm. Wayne E. Meyer, who is regarded as the “Father of Aegis” for his service as the AEGIS weapons system manager and later for his development of the AEGIS shipbuilding project office.
