Team Eglin kicked off National Women’s History Month March 1, with a breakfast to highlight this year’s theme of “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business.”

The breakfast was an educational event as well as a time to recognize trailblazers working here, who successfully challenged the role of women in the workplace and Air Force.

Attendees heard from trailblazers from the past and present as well as reflected on how far women’s rights have come throughout the years.
Representing the trailblazers from the past, Lucrecia Rogers, from the Bob Hope Enlisted Village, served in the Air Force in the early 1950’s as a personnelist. She outlined the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, that allowed women to receive permanent military status in the armed forces, including the newly created Air Force.

“This single act cracked open the doors of opportunity for myself and my fellow female veterans,” said Rogers.

Dr. Janet Wolfson, a research engineer at the Air Force Research Lab’s Munitions Directorate, empowered the audience to “be better” by challenging the status quo and “dig deep” to find the right answers for not only the individual, but the teams they are on.

“Understand your strengths, identify and know your weaknesses, and go out and be better, do better, be more and become the trailblazers we need to shape the future of the Air Force,” said Wolfson.

Three women were also honored with the Trailblazer Award for their efforts in reshaping the future for others who will follow in their footsteps: Dr. Amanda Schrand from AFRL, Capt. Tawny Gardner, 96th Force Support Squadron, and Staff Sgt. Erica Johnson, 96th Civil Engineer Squadron.

Colonel Matthew Higer, 96th Test Wing, Vice Commander, closed out the breakfast by challenging the audience to continue to tell the stories and facts that were presented to the group.

“The story lives on, but only if we tell it. I will go home to tell my own daughter today and I challenge you all to do the same,” said Higer. “Go home or back to work and share what you have learned.”

There are two more events to come during National Women’s History Month. The first is a mentoring experience with the women of the Bob Hope Enlisted Village March 8. The second will be an all-women’s retreat ceremony dedicated to the women who serve, both active duty and civilian, here March 30.
