Cincinnati Marine ready to answer nation's call

    CAMP PENDLETON, CA, UNITED STATES

    03.01.2017

Story by Lance Cpl. Jacob Pruitt

    15th Marine Expeditionary Unit

Maj. Christopher M. Baker, the fire support officer for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. He joined the Marine Corps when he was attending college.

“I went straight into college after high school because I wanted to make my parents and teachers happy, but I wasn’t happy,” he said. “I wanted to travel the world and the Marine Corps afforded me the opportunity. I needed to do both.”

Since joining the Marine Corps he said he learned team work and camaraderie is what makes any organization succeeded and excel. “Being a Marine to me means being part of team, with likeminded goals with everyone working to make those goals a reality and accomplish the nation’s mission.”

Fire support officer isn’t the first position Baker held in the Marine Corps. He’s had experiences in multiple fields.

“I loved every job I’ve had in the Marine Corps. When I was a military police dog handler the kennel master made me leave and go home because I would be spending all my time there. I don’t think I worked a single day in that military occupational specialty because I loved my job.

“When I was a mortarman I loved the versatility of the things that I could do. From calling for fire to working in a fire direction center whose main job is to get rounds down range, and now finally working with the 15th Marine expeditionary unit as the fire support officer for the MEU.”
Currently Baker is attached to the command element of the MEU and coordinates ground fire with the battalion landing team. The MEU is slated to deploy later this year, and Baker said he’s excited to be a part of the unit and looking forward to carrying out the MEU’s mission around the globe.

“The MEU does for the world what the police do for our community on their patrols, they train, and prepare so that when the need arises they are the ones who answer the call, we are the nation’s 911 force.”
