FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – The Numaniyah, Iraq Handicapped Association celebrated the opening of a new facility, Aug. 8, 2008.
The facility, which was built with coalition funds, will be used by the association for administrative purposes, and will also have rooms dedicated to therapy.
Soldiers of El Salvador's Battalion Cuscatlán supervised construction of the 200 square meter building, which cost about $200,000.
"It's good that it will be open to help people with special needs," said Ahmed, a local citizen who attended the event.
The project was first requested during the eighth rotation of Battalion Cuscatlán. The process took until now, near the end of the tenth rotation, to complete, said Capt. Alejandro Gutierrez, of Battalion Cuscatlán.
Construction on the facility began, June 30, 2008 and finished a few days ahead of schedule.
"The population [of people with special needs] is very large, and no one knows why," said Gutierrez. "We have taken many actions to help them, supplying wheelchairs, food and other supplies."
The project is expected to benefit nearly 2,500 people in Numaniyah and the surrounding area.
