Whether separating after the first enlistment or retiring after 20 years of active duty service, most military members will eventually transition back into civilian life.

A Hiring Our Heroes Military Transition Summit, open to service members, veterans and military spouses, will take place March 15-17, 2017, at various locations on base.

“This is for everyone,” said Sue Holliday, Airman and Family Readiness Center director. “Everyone eventually transitions out of the military.”

This inaugural event will bring more than 90 employers and Team Dover Airmen together. It will also feature personal branding, a hiring fair, transition education and industry workshops.

“It’s a three day comprehensive and flexible hiring event sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Hiring Our Heroes,” said 1st Lt. Daniel Sloss, 436th Mission Support Group executive officer. “The days will included a variety of educational seminars, both for Airman looking for information about the next phase of their career and for leaders and supervisors who are leading those Airmen so they can help give them advice and mentorship.”

The three days of events will include:

    Day 1: March 15
8 a.m. - Registration at the Base Theater
9 a.m. - Keynote Remarks at the Base Theater
9:15 to 10 a.m. - ‘A Conversation with Employers on Best Practices’ at the Base Theater
10:10 to 11 a.m. - ‘What Leaders Need to Know About Transition’ at the Base Theater
10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Industry Briefs at the Landings Club (Six 55-minute sessions)
    5 to 7 p.m. - Networking Event/Rehearsal at the Landings Club

    Day 2: March 16
8 a.m. - Job Seeker Registration at the Base Theater
9 to 10 a.m. - Opening Ceremony at the Base Theater
10 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Employment Workshops at the Base Theater (Two 55-minute sessions)
    1 to 4 p.m. - Hiring Fair at Building 550 (TMO)

    Day 3: March 17
    8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. - ‘Afterburner’ at the 3d Airlift Squadron auditorium (Building 204)
    8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Spouse Symposium at the Landings Club

“The transition summit will benefit Dover Airmen because they will be put in front of 100-plus employee opportunities,” said Laura Kantor-Chupp, First State Community Partnership manager. “That is not something to take lightly, they will have opportunities to meet with employers from the local level, the state level and also the national level.”

All who plan to attend the summit are requested to please register ahead of time. To register for the summit, please go to www.hireourheroes.org/events.

“You don’t have to go to the three full days,” said Kantor-Chupp. “You can target what you are interested in and it’s a very flexible schedule.”

As a reminder, all everyone is welcome to take part in this event, it is not solely for those activity seeking employment.

“We are trying to get away from the word ‘Job-seeker,’” said Kantor-Chupp. “Because someone might not be actively looking a job, but they are looking for what opportunities are going to be there when they eventually make that transition. Also, to be face-to-face with some of these corporate representatives from well-known companies is an opportunity that you don’t get every day.”

According to Holliday, every Airman should be preparing themselves for that eventual transition.

“We always tell our [First Term Airmen Center] students, when we brief them, to start building your resume now,” said Holliday. “Because everything that you do in the military somehow translates into a civilian job. They should be prepared, ready to go. But we see a lot of people wait to the last minute. This should open up people’s eyes, even though you might not be leaving in five to 10 years, get ready, prepare yourself. Take the opportunity to get out and learn from these folks. It’s a win-win for everybody.”

For Dover AFB access: Any summit attendees who do not have existing base access privileges must adhere to the following protocol no later than March 1, 2017, or access for the event could be delayed or denied. Send an email to aldrin.alarcon.1@us.af.mil, with the subject line ‘Transition Summit EAL information Your Name Here.’ In the body of the email, please provide the following information: company name (if applicable), full name, birth date, and driver’s license number and state of issue.
