SOUTHWEST ASIA - Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations, Aug. 5, 2008, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials.
In Afghanistan, an Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle dropped guided bomb unit-38s onto vehicle based improvised explosive devices near Kabul. The joint terminal attack controller reported the mission successful.
Near Kandahar, a Navy F/A-18C Hornet dropped a GBU-38 onto enemy combatants engaging friendly forces. The mission was confirmed successful by the JTAC.
An F/A-18C dropped a GBU-38 onto insurgents placing improvised explosive devices in the vicinity of Now Zad. The JTAC declared the mission successful.
In the vicinity of Morghab, an Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped a GBU-38 into a field to deter enemy activities. The mission was reported successful by the JTAC.
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs conducted a show of force to deter insurgent activities in the vicinity of Talabkhel. The JTAC confirmed the mission successful.
F-15Es performed a show of force in the vicinity of Morghab to deter extremist activities. The mission was declared successful by the JTAC.
F/A-18Cs conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Sangin. The JTAC reported the mission successful.
In total, 70 close air support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Fifteen Air Force and Royal Air Force surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two Royal Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons dropped GBU-38s onto buildings containing insurgents firing at coalition forces. The JTAC declared the mission successful.
In total, coalition aircraft flew 47 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.
Twenty-six Air Force and Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, two Royal Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.
Approximately 125 airlift sorties were flown; 523 tons of cargo delivered, and 2,634 passengers were transported. This included approximately 39,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.
Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq, Japan and Korea flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.
On, Aug. 4, 2008, U.S. Air Force, French, and Royal Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 53 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.8 million pounds of fuel to 215 receiving aircraft.
