Camp Pendleton Hosts Tails and Trails 5k Dog Walk

    CAMP PENDLETON, CA, UNITED STATES

    01.28.2017

Story by Lance Cpl. Emmanuel Necoechea

    Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

“It is a wonderful event to come out because it emphasizes not only fitness and a healthy life style but also teaches pet responsibility," Jill Prichard, Race Supervisor, SEMPER FIT Department, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS).

The dog walk was free and open to active duty services members, their families and any authorized patrons like DOD civilian employees here on base. This year there was an outing twice as big as last year's Tails and Trails 5k Dog Walk.

“It’s teaching them pet responsibility and gives them an avenue that isn’t a dog park for them to come and have social interaction for their dogs with other dogs here on base,” said Prichard. “You know dogs are pack animals so they always want to interact with and socialize with other animals. It is focused on them, but there is also a focus on the pet owner, so they learn how to be responsible with their pets.”

Organizers of T&T want participants to remember to take proper care of their pets by exercising them, giving them social opportunities, feeding them correctly and making sure they have all their shots.

“We are here because we wanted something for the kids and the dog,” Sgt. Mathew Klopp, 1st Intelligence Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “You know it’s something for everybody.”

The Camp Pendleton Veterinary Clinic was present to give information on pet health to the patrons of the base.

This is one of eleven events in the Pendleton Races Hard Corps Race Series which include such things as the Marine Corps Mud Run, the Water Warrior and 7k Beach Run.
