The Nassau County Fire Department from New York visited Wounded Warrior Battalion-East to wish wounded service members and their families happy holidays and present gifts at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Dec. 9.

The Nassau County Fire Department collects donations from generous donors for wounded military members and their families. The department has been distributing them to several Wounded Warrior centers for 13 years.

"All the people here are really great, they all offer a helping hand," said Lance Cpl. Andrew Smith, a Marine at Wounded Warrior Battalion-East. "They offer more than gifts, if you need anything whether it be financial, personal, materialistic, they’re here to help so it’s great."

Everyone at Wounded Warrior Battalion-East has their own hurdle to overcome and the Nassasu County Fire Fighters help them over it, said Smith.

"A lot of people here are struggling with their own battles," said Smith. "You have a lot of people that come out from the fire department and a lot of them are former military. It’s really easy to tell who was, they can kind of relate. The battles that people are going through are not all the same but they can relate in some ways."

The fire fighters started this program to assist wounded military members and their families. The department continues to assist wounded military members out of their own kindness.

"It’s a humbling and inspiring effort on their part because when you think about it they are service providers too," said Lt. Col. Christophe Hrudka, commanding officer of Wounded Warrior Battalion-East. "For them to take the time out their lives and all the things their dealing with in their work to do this for our wounded, ill and injured Marines is inspiring."

The Nassau County Fire Fighters are not the only ones to thank for the generous gifts given to the wounded warriors. The community of Nassau County of New York greatly assisted the fire fighters in its beginning and continues to donate to the cause.

"It started as a collection for a Marine," said William Grogan, fire commissioner from the Stuart Manor Fire Department. "The fire department had just learned this young man joined the Marines so we were going to send him some care packages. The goodwill of the people was so overflowing that we had more than we could handle, instead of just sending care packages we had a couple of trucks full of gifts to distribute. We came up with an idea, let’s try and see if we can get into the wounded Soldiers, Sailors and Marines. We found out about Wounded Warrior Battalions, so we expanded the scope of what we were doing and that’s why we’re here today continuing that commitment."
