BAGHDAD – Applause could be heard throughout the Risalah area as the ribbon was cut during the grand opening of the Risalah Iraqi police station, July 22.
The new police station is the fifth IP station to open in the area of Abu Ghraib, west of Baghdad, in an effort to continue the increase in security.
"This is a great day for the people of Abu Ghraib, as it is another step for the Iraqi police in their efforts to bring enduring security to the Iraqi people," said Brig. Gen. Kareem, district police chief, Abu Ghuraib.
In attendance at the ceremony were leaders of the Iraqi army who were there to show support of the police and show the community that the IA and the IP are working together despite a history of mistrust.
The opening of this station began a new era for the Iraqi security forces, as the IA and police will expand their role and work together for the betterment of the Iraqi people.
"I have served with many units, done many things," said Capt. Jon O'Dea, native of Providence, R.I., and ISF coordinator, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, "Gimlets," 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, "Warrior," 25th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad. "I would stand side-by-side with these men any day."
