The coalition helped repair, buildup and operate Qayyarah West Airfield, also known as Q-West, and the space therein to ultimately turn it back over to the Iraqi Air Force. The cleanup represented the turnover of the airfield and air operations to the Iraqis.
U.S. Air Force Col. Rhett D. Champagne, commander 821st Contingency Response Group said the handover of Qayyarah West Air Field was meaningful.
“The significance of the handover is the Iraqi Air Force is coming in to run their own operations,” said Champagne. “We were here to get it off the ground and get it started, but the whole idea was to turn it back over to the Iraqi Air Force.”
Iraqi Air Force commander, Col. Abdullah said he looks forward to the continued partnership.
“As long as we are here we will maintain the same proven policies for airfield operations,” said Abdullah, who is also the deputy commander of Qayyarah West Airfield.
Both commanders agreed that the day was an accomplishment in that those involved demonstrated patience and the partnership will continue to achieve success.
Champagne concluded by saying the Iraqi’s presence at Qayyarah has been huge and that it’s that next step towards returning Q-West back to normalcy.
