Commander’s call, holiday party offer support for deployers

Story by Senior Airman Tara Abrahams

    9th Reconnaissance Wing

Col. Craig C. Peters, 940th Air Refueling Wing commander, held a commander’s call followed by a holiday party, for the wing’s members and their families December 3, 2016, at Beale Air Force Base, California.

With holidays fast approaching and over 100 Airmen assigned to the wing scheduled for deployment in the upcoming months, the event was focused on support for those deploying and their families.

During the commander’s call, Peters took the opportunity to speak to the upcoming deployers. He and representatives from various agencies emphasized the support services that are available, not only to military members, but also their families.

“For deployers and their families, this event really helped ready them,” said a deploying master sergeant, “especially first-time deploying Airmen. The 940th’s help guide is really beneficial.”

Peters and Chief Master Sgt. Carmen Madia, 940 ARW command chief, also recognized many people for their achievements over the past year, including award winners, medal recipients, Community College of the Air Force graduates and recent promotees.

“I felt honored to be recognized by my leadership in front of my peers,” said Staff Sgt. Brian E. Gordon, NCO of the quarter. “Knowing that the work you dedicate yourself to daily is recognized by others is a great feeling.”

As Peters wrapped up his closing remarks, “sleigh” bells rang in the back of the hangar and one of Santa’s elves ran in to inform the commander of Santa’s arrival.

On Christmas Eve, Santa is known to fly around the world in a sleigh, but when the hangar doors opened, Santa and another elf were seen stepping out of the wing’s eighth and final KC-135 Stratotanker. With that, the holiday party kicked off.

During the party, Airmen and their families were invited to tour the aircraft, take photos with Santa, eat, win prizes and socialize. They were also given the opportunity to check out the information tables that filled one side of the hangar.

The tables were set up for a variety of services including financial, family and personal assistance, especially to assist those preparing for deployment. Each table had a representative present to share information about its services and ways to take advantage of them.

“There was a lot of information available and a lot of great agencies that came out to answer our questions,” the master sergeant said. “The event was really well done.”
