FORT KNOX, Ky. - Soldiers, civilians, contractors, and families of the U.S. Army Human Resources Command delivered more than 350 winter clothing items, 300 toys and 1,300 food items in November and December to several local community organizations.
One of the schools that HRC’s Officer Personnel Management Directorate supports is Irvington Elementary located in Irvington, KY through the Partners in Education program. Since 2010, several of the Divisions within OPMD provided volunteers, food, clothing, and other needed items to this school to support the children and families of the community.
OPMD recently supported a Veterans Day Program at Irvington Elementary. The HRC Honor Guard participated in a flag-folding ceremony with many active duty Service members, veterans, and retirees in attendance. OPMD ran a winter coat drive and donated winter coats, hats and gloves to the children of Irvington Elementary at the Veterans Day Program event.
“The winter coat drive provided nearly one hundred students with a warm jacket for winter,” said Mr. Jon Miller, Principal of Irvington Elementary School. “Seeing the students’ faces light up when given a brand new coat was priceless.”
In November, OPMD put on a Thanksgiving Food Drive, which collected over 1300 food items and donated more than 25 bags of groceries to families of Irvington Elementary to assist with their Thanksgiving feast.
“It was amazing to see so many people help out, the outpouring of donations, and the food was incredible,” said volunteer, Mr. James Clark, Human Resources Assistant with Health Services Division, OPMD. “I feel so blessed to have been part of something so great.”
HRC members also donated hundreds of toys to the Salvation Army’s Santa’s Workshop program. Additionally, several HRC sections sponsored children by providing requested items from Angel Tree, another Salvation Army program.
"This time of year is more about giving than receiving. Our participation in donating to families in need provides us an opportunity to demonstrate our willingness to serve," said Maj. Lindsey Wible, HRC Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander.
HRC also collected winter clothes for the Louisville Homeless Veterans Christmas Project. Nearly 250 items were donated including hats, gloves, coats, sweaters, shirts, pants, underwear and socks. Packages of clothes were taken to the Veterans Administration to be given in hopes of making the season brighter for families.
"We want to make sure that everyone has what they need for the winter. It's important to give back and to show we care about the sacrifices our veterans have made," said LaAnna Mraz, HRC Executive Assistant.
These all-volunteer efforts by HRC provide opportunities to share in the season of giving and highlights HRC's commitment to the local community. Every bit counts, as small efforts can combine to help many individuals and family members in the surrounding Fort Knox community.
