    3d Medical Command Deployment Support

The 3rd Medical Command Deployment Support remains proactive in suicide prevention by conducting a three day applied suicide intervention skills training workshop for selected personnel throughout the division at Gillem Enclave.

The training is designed to instruct leaders throughout the 3rd MCDS on how to intervene should they encounter someone on the verge of taking his or her own life.

1st Lt. Michelle Glaser, an applied suicide intervention skills trainer and social worker from the 804th Medical Brigade said, "Most people don't go to graduate school for counseling, social work or psychology, this training gives them an introduction and good foundation of skills to do some brief intervention for people in the community who may be at risk for contemplating or attempting suicide."

The training equipped soldiers with the skills to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide, identify and reach out to those in need of support, develop a safety plan that neutralizes risks, and link people with community resources for continued treatment if needed.

The first day of training consisted of introductory prevention measures and instruction on how to use the soldier leader risk reduction tool. The next two days of training focused on applying those skills through interactive role play.

The culminating exercise for the training is the Bridge Scenario, a simulation that allows students to navigate through the "Pathway of Assisting Life Model", a tool they can use should they encounter someone in need of emergency intervention.

"It's easy to say we want to help people, it's another thing to actually do something about it. I've worked in crisis intervention for many years as a professional, this model is very similar to the skills we use every day during a crisis intervention. The meat and potatoes of this course are grounded in what really works and if you come to ASIST committed to learn the skills and the progression in which they are used this can help not only in emergencies but in your daily interactions with others." said Glaser.

3rd Medical Command Deployment Support is a senior deployable medical command and control headquarters, providing support to U.S. Army Africa and U.S. Army Central areas of operation. The division provides support and technical supervision for more than 6,515 soldiers and civilians located in 21 states and Puerto Rico to prepare and provide trained and ready soldiers and units to U.S. Army Reserve Command for mobilization. Capabilities include health care specialists, X-ray technicians, ophthalmology, nurses, physician assistants, physicians, dentists, surgeons, and veterinarians.
