FORT BRAGG, N.C. --“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt

Cumberland County citizens must exercise their 15th Amendment rights and vote in this year’s general election.

Even though the deadline to register to vote has passed, residents can still vote by visiting a One-Stop voting site.

One-Stop voting, or early voting, is when voters go to a voting site before the general election, give their information in person to a voting representative, and vote at their convenience away from a voting site.

However, if you’re a resident of Cumberland County, and registered to vote before Oct. 14, the Board of Elections will assign you a voting site close to where you live for the general election. Early voting starts today.

The general election is Nov. 8, and residents of Cumberland County will be able to vote for the office of the president as well as state officials at their assigned voting site.

Upon arrival to a voting site, a voter will need to bring valid proof of address. An ID from a state or federal agency, a utility bill or bank statement, and a license to hunt, fish or own a gun are all types of valid ID forms that will allow a person to vote.

Even if a person cannot provide proof of address, officials can issue a provisional ballot to take home, fill out and bring back to a voting site any day before the election if any of those forms cannot be produced.

“People talk about it (voting) being a privilege,” said Terri Robertson, director of elections with the Cumberland County Board of Elections. “I don’t see it so much as a privilege but as a duty. You’re a citizen of the United States and you’re a resident of the county. You should be voting.”

The Federal Voting Assistance Program is also available to help voters participate in the election.

The FVAP has online voting information and registration available to service members, their Families, citizens overseas and anyone voting away from their state.

The FVAP website can give potential voters access to their respective state’s voting registration process and give them a chance to vote in the general election. The website also has a contact number so voters can talk to a specialist who can answer questions to help navigate the website and register to vote.

Members of the military who are not residents of Cumberland County and do not want to use the FVAP website can contact their local voting assistance officer.

VAOs ensure that overseas voters and service members understand their voting rights and provide potential voters with accurate, nonpartisan voting information and assistance to take part in local and national elections.

“Voting is important and all people need to know that even one vote can count,” said Pfc. XaViera Masline, a combat documentation production specialist with the 3rd Mission Information Support Battalion, 4th Special Forces group. “I am going to vote.”
