The Sailors were divided into two groups; one group sorted through donated items and the other group packed backpacks to hand out to the local community.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Rian Garr, assigned to Naval Station Norfolk Administration Department, spoke about the positive effects of volunteering.
“The volunteering effort yesterday was very fulfilling,” said, Garr. “I am so happy to be part of something so small, impacts so many lives.”
Each month the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia provides 18 million pounds of food; about 15 million meals, in a 4,750 square mile target area that includes the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin, Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore to nearly 200,000 families in need.
Naval Station Norfolk Volunteer Coordinator Chief Marcus D. Offord spoke about the importance of community relations for the Navy.
“Volunteering helps break up the monotony of Navy life, our Sailors have the opportunity to give back to the community and make a difference,” said Offord. “This gives the Sailors a chance to get out and do something different while representing the Navy,” said Offord.
