JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - Alaska Army National Guard recruiter Sgt. Casey Waters took flight Nov. 7 to San Diego to represent Alaska for the title of Top Recruiter in Strength Maintenance Advisory Committee 6.

Soldiers competing to be the best recruiter in the region are recipients of the Director’s 54 Award as the recruiter with the most enlistments into their state’s National Guard for the fiscal year.

In addition to earning the most enlistments in the state, Waters exceeded that requirement by gaining a reputation for being a stellar Soldier who is well respected. Master Sgt. Rodger Morrison heralded him as an example.

“Young Soldiers coming up the ranks should take a good look at him and see how they should handle and take care of themselves as a Soldier,” said Morrison.

Waters was a squad leader for the military police unit in the 49th Missile Defense Battalion at Fort Greely where he also competed in and won the United States Army Reserves Alaska combatives tournament.

As Waters progressed in his career, his experience and dedication earned him a recruiting billet in Anchorage.

“[Waters] actually worked with us in the past… He worked with us for a few years on the Mobile Event Team in recruiting.” said Morrison.

In his first year as a recruiter, Waters was recognized as Rookie of the Year and was nominated for the 9-in-90 challenge to enlist nine recruits in 90 days and attended the awards ceremony in Washington, DC.

Waters continues to provide a positive portrayal of the Alaska National Guard as an assistant instructor for the University of Alaska, Anchorage’s Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program, conducting physical readiness training with cadets and aiding the instruction of Military Science courses.

“[Waters] is an example of what a young non-commissioned officer that is up and coming is supposed to be… He’s a Soldier’s Soldier,” said Morrison. “He’s very intelligent, very level headed, he’s grounded and he’s definitely moving in the right direction.”

Represented in the competition are the top recruiters from Wash., Ore., Idaho, N.D., S.D., Mont. and Wyo. The top recruiter from SMAC 6 will go on to compete in Phoenix, Ariz. to prove themselves as the best recruiter in the nation.
