Ohio Air National Guard
MANSFIELD, Ohio - The Ohio Air National Guard will stand up the 200th Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers Detachment 1 during a flagging ceremony at Mansfield-Lahm Airport, Building 422, at 10:30 a.m., July 20.
This flagging ceremony will consists of two events. The first event is the official proclamation from the Department of the Air Force recognizing the 200th RED HORSE Detachment 1 as an official unit, and the second event is the unveiling of the unit colors and official assumption-of-command ceremony.
This ceremony marks the end of one long journey for the Ohio National Guard that began with the release of the initial 2005 base realignment and closure recommendations. The initial Air Force recommendation was to dismantle the 179th Airlift Wing and close down National Guard operations at the base. Due to the outstanding record of achievement by the personnel of the 179th and with the assistance of Ohio's congressional delegation, the unit and the base were spared, even though the final BRAC law still requires the C-130 Hercules aircraft to be dispersed to other units in 2010. The decision to leave the base open and 179th in place gave the Ohio National Guard the opportunity to secure additional missions for Mansfield. Through the Air Force's total force integration initiatives, the Ohio National Guard has been assured of a flying mission for the 179th into the foreseeable future and the establishment of Detachment 1 of the 200th RED HORSE Squadron.
RED HORSE squadrons (each air guard squadron is formed by a headquarters squadron and a detachment) provide the Air Force with a highly mobile civil engineering response force to support contingency and special operations worldwide. They are self-sufficient, 400-person squadrons capable of rapid response and independent operations in remote, high-threat environments.
RED HORSE units provide heavy repair capability and construction support when required and can exceed normal base civil engineer capabilities and when Army engineer support is not readily available. Their internal assets include weapons, vehicles/equipment and vehicle maintenance, food service, supply and medical equipment.
The RED HORSE recently returned from Operation Jumpstart at the southwest border of the United States, successfully completing their mission.
RED HORSE Detachment 1 is located at Mansfield-Lahm Airport and the RED HORSE Headquarters is located at Camp Perry, Port Clinton, Ohio.
