KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- The 403rd Wing's Security Forces Squadron conducted state-of-the-art training using a virtual Firearms Training System Sunday.

403rd SFS fire team members tested their responses to various scenarios using Bluetooth-enabled weapons that provided the trainees full-sensor feedback for their weapons. This provided them a complete and immediate after-action review of their performance. The training was used as a post-deployment refresher training after security forces reservists returned from a more than 180-day deployment to the Central Command Area of Operations.

"This training system is very realistic and (provides) instant feedback of what the trainee did right and wrong. We can keep running the personnel through different scenarios until they are performing everything with 100 percent accuracy," said Master Sgt. Lucas Applewhite, 403rd SFS training manager.

Security forces members conducted the training using only one room in the FATS facility here, where recorded scenarios can change based upon the trainees response to the scenes projected on the screen. Staff Sgt. Roger Wade, 403rd SFS fire team member, noted that even though the FATS system is not intended to replace live training scenarios, it does provide effective and time-efficient training for SFS members.

"It doesn't take up nearly as much time, space and resources to perform this type of training since you can do it all right here on the screen," said Wade.

Wade said the software for this version of the FATS had been installed here only four months ago, so this was the first opportunity some fire team members had to train on the new system.

One other advantage Applewhite noted was that this system provides the squadron with the ability to save money on ammunition and transportation time and costs to traditional ranges.

"This is a great way to augment our training for low cost and it is another great tool that keeps our reservists proficient and combat ready for the next time we are tasked to deploy to support combat operations," said Applewhite.
