KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Civilian employer support is vital to reservists and guardsmen.

According to the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve website, employer support increases the likelihood that citizen warriors will stay in the armed forces and acknowledges the sacrifices made by reservists and guardsmen every day.

The ESGR recognizes and assists Citizen Airmen and their civilian employers through a variety of programs.

The organization was created in 1972 to help resolve conflicts and offer career assistance to uniformed service members. Today ESGR recognizes employer support and educates reservists and guardsmen on rights for employment through the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Right Act (USERRA). With branch committees in every state and headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, the organization’s mostly volunteer staff work to boost employer support of those in military service.

“ESGR is great because it raises awareness of reservists and guardsmen,” Kasey North, a Mississippi employer said.

One key way the organization raises awareness is through a Statement of Support, which is a certificate signed by the employer to showcase their support of the Guard and Reserve in their place of business. Employers can submit a statement online using the ESGR website.

This isn’t the only program offered by ESGR. They also have awards. The ESGR awards employers for their support through a nomination process. Reservists, guardsmen and their families can nominate employers for several awards.

“Employers are honored to receive the awards,” says Jackie Sharp, program technician for the ESGR Mississippi Committee. “They support their uniformed service employees because of their love for this country.”

These awards include the Patriot Award certificate, given to individual employers who show support for their citizen warrior employees. The Spouse Patriot Award is given to an employer of the spouse of a citizen warriors who shows support for the spouse and family. The Seven Seals Award is given to an employer or organization who is dedicated to the ESGR mission. The Above and Beyond Award is presented to an employer is goes above and beyond to support their citizen warrior. The Pro Patria Award is presented yearly by each state committee to one small business, one large business, and one public sector employer.

The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest honor given to civilian employers for their support of those in the guard and reserve. The award is broken into three categories: small business, large business and employers from the public sector. Nominations are received in each state and committees recommend employers to national selection board to choose 15 employers to receive the award.

The Extraordinary Employer Support Award is given to employers who show continual support of their citizen warrior employees. Only nominees who received the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award or the Pro Partia are eligible for consideration.
