Members in the local community here attended a ceremony open to the public at Pasadena City Hall in celebration of Veteran’s Day and the Marine Corps Reserve Centennial, Nov. 11, 2016.
Marines from 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Headquartered in Pasadena, celebrated the centennial with the community that has shown them support for the past 100 years.
Among those representing the men and women of the United States Armed Forces was Brig. Gen. Paul K. Lebidine, commanding general, 4th MarDiv, joined by Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek, local veterans, and members of the police and fire departments.
“It’s my privilege today to be a part of this ceremony to recognize our veterans that have served us with honor, distinction, valor and patriotism,” said Lebidine. “As long as we have great cities such as Pasadena, their sacrifices and service will never be forgotten.
“My hope is that the public will take away a deeper understanding of our history and what we have helped accomplished over the past 100 years that has shaped this country.”
Mayor Tornek also made a point to recognize local veterans and the positive impact they’ve had on today’s society.
“The history of the United States is rich with the deeds of those Pasadena residents that have served in our armed forces with honor and distinction,” he said. “Today we recognize these courageous men and women who represent the best our nation and community have to offer, and with their service, these veterans have proven that America’s freedoms are worth protecting.”
“It’s important to appreciate what past military members from all our services have contributed so we can have a better understanding of what our freedoms mean and to not take them for granted,” Lebidine said. “Above the fray of this last week, there certainly is some common ground and understanding that America’s freedoms are worth protecting and are never free.
“Veteran’s Day is a time for all of us to simply say ‘thank you’ to some wonderful Americans.”
The ceremony concluded with the Blair High School band playing taps and the Condor Air Squadron flying North American Aviation T-6 Texans in formation over Pasadena City Hall. The squadron is part of the Condor Squadron Officer’s and Airmen’s Association, a unique non-profit organization founded in 1965 by a group of WWII fighter pilots that perform for parades, celebrations, memorials and other community services.
The Marine Corps Reserve marked 100 years of service on Aug. 29, 2016, with nationwide events scheduled throughout the year. Today, approximately 500 Reserve Marines are providing fully integrated global operational support to the Fleet and Combatant Commanders.
