Toddler Time Transforms Early Literacy for Tikes

Toddler Time, a literacy program for children between 18 months and three-years-old, focuses on the five points of early literacy, as outlined by the “Every Child Ready to Read” project, which includes talking, singing, reading, writing and playing.

"It’s a very open environment," said Chloe Barbour, a library technician. "The kids have the freedom to interact and learn in a fun way."

Parents and children both participate in the preplanned activities during Toddler Time, allowing children to explore and learn amongst themselves while parents have an opportunity to interact with other parents and service members.
“My daughter has blossomed since she’s been here,” said Krystle Molina, a mother and military spouse. "Before this she was very shy and hardly spoke; now she actually communicates and wants to participate."

Since its recent beginnings in October 2016, Toddler Time has grown from 10 to 42 participants. With popularity increasing among library patrons, plans to expand to the Little Creek Branch Library are underway. The branch library’s program is slated to be fully available starting in January 2017.

"The library technicians really take the time to ensure that this is a safe environment for the kids,” said Brandy Stevens, library director. “Their attention to detail is impressive.”
