As the Veteran's Day parade made it's way up Hondo Pass toward Old Glory park, a line of more than 20 Soldiers from 1AD, 2nd Brigade Combat Team and the 1AD Sustainment Brigade carried the 5000 square foot flag "Old Glory" on their shoulders.
Iron Knight Pfc. Blake Miller, a Fort Bliss Soldier assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 2BCT, 1AD was on hand to help un-furl "Old Glory" during the raising ceremony.
"I came out today to honor those who have served before me," Miller, an Oviedo, Fla. native said. "I want to show respect for all veterans, especially the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives so I could live mine free."
For some, Veteran's Day is a family affair. Capt. Caitlin Beal, an Operations Officer (S3) with the 1AD Sustainment BDE, is a Veteran herself, having served in Afghanistan. She is just the latest in a long line of Soldiers in her family.
"This is a way I can give back," said the Fort Worth, Texas native. "This is a day to show Veterans that they haven't been forgotten."
As "Old Glory" raised to the top of the 200 foot tall flag pole in the center of the park, and despite the hundreds of locals, Veterans and Soldiers in attendance, the only sounds heard were the National Anthem and the massive flag buffeting in the El Paso wind. As it hit the top and came back down to half-mast in respect for America's Fallen, the crowd cheered and clapped at near deafening levels.
"Whether you've worn a uniform or not, we're all here to pay homage to those who have," Beal said. "We're lucky to have a community like El Paso to wrap their arms around us in support. We're all one community here."
