JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), Ray Mabus presents energy conservation awards during an all hands call at Dewey’s All Hands Club to several commands in the Southeast Region at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville Nov. 3.
Patrol Squadron (VP) 5 received a command level award for Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic and NAS Jacksonville and Naval Station (NAVSTA) Mayport were awarded gold level of achievement certificates.
“I am proud to recognize the commitment to excellence that the Southeast Region has shown in energy efficiency and conservation,” said Mabus. “Achieving these goals have made our Navy and Marine Corps stronger by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and improving our energy security.”
The SECNAV annually grants eight energy conservation awards to various units and activities of the Navy and Marine Corps for their energy conservation accomplishments during the preceding fiscal year.
“The fiscal year 16 Gold Award NAS Jacksonville received is recognition of our installation’s outstanding energy program and its achievement in fiscal year 15,” said Andrew Rubio, NAS Jacksonville’s installation energy manager. “The Navy has some very challenging energy goals to meet and in fiscal year 15 we made some significant strides towards those goals with energy and water intensity reductions of 24 and 26 percent respectively.”
The objective of this award program is to promote excellence in the areas of energy conservation and efficiency, energy management, renewable energy, new technology, training innovation, and awareness efforts within the Department of the Navy (DON).
“It was an honor to receive the SECNAV’s energy award,” said Cmdr. Luke Greene, NAVSTA Mayport’s public works officer. “This was a reflection of a lot of people’s hard work, particularly our Installation Energy Manager, Chris Vidal. It also indicated a cultural shift towards energy awareness and a focus on energy conservation.”
The Fiscal Year 2016 award recipients set the standard for our Navy and Marine Corps team and are driving changes within the service that will ensure our future mission success.
“This award is due largely to the participation and efforts of key personnel aboard NAS Jacksonville to conserve and raise energy awareness like the volunteer Building Energy Monitors who worked to spread the word throughout the year across their facilities,” said Cmdr. Sylvester Adamah, NAS Jacksonville’s public works officer. “A lot of the progress made over the years to conserve energy has been thanks to construction and renovation projects to improve efficiency, but in order to meet the future goals mandated by the President and SECNAV, we must continue to rely even more on our people to recognize and eliminate energy waste at the user level. This is an all-hands effort.”
The SECNAV announces the previous fiscal year award winners during the third quarter of each fiscal year and the winners are authorized to display the SECNAV Energy Conservation Award flag for a period of one year from the date of the award announcement.
“Bravo Zulu to all the winning commands who have served as the model for the rest of the DON,” said Mabus. “ I encourage all commanders to look to the accomplishments of our award winners and identify ways that your commands can use energy to its greatest effect.”
