BATON ROUGE, La. -- Sailors visited with students of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge to share their experiences serving in the Navy as part of Baton Rouge Navy Week, Oct. 31.
Members of the Boys and Girls Club gathered at the Alaska Street afterschool site to watch a performance by the Navy Ceremonial Guard, see a first-hand demonstration of robotic technology from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (EODGRU) Two, and to interact with members of the Navy.
According to Alaska Street acting site director Bri Davee, the visit by Sailors offered members of the club a unique opportunity to engage with service members that students normally wouldn’t meet living in Baton Rouge.
“This is honestly an incredible opportunity for our kids,” said Davee. “It gives our kids the opportunity to see things they have never seen before and be introduced to active duty Sailors. It is really neat to have this sort of interaction with the Navy.”
Boys and Girls Club offers programs designed to develop good character, build leadership and provide guidance to youth between the ages of 6 and 18. Examples of these programs include computer instruction, sports leagues, photography, tutoring, arts and crafts, social events and field trips.
“Having Navy Sailors engage with our kids really supports our efforts here,” said Davee. “A lot of these kids might not have the support system at home and these Sailors can serve as role models and ultimately help to empower our students.”
More than 25 national programs are available in the areas of education, the environment, health, the arts, careers, alcohol, drug and pregnancy prevention, leadership development and athletics.
Navy Weeks focus a variety of outreach assets, equipment, and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements with key influencers and organizations representing all sectors of the market.
For Navy participants the event served as an opportunity to give back to the community and showcase many of the diverse talents Navy Sailors have.
“Opportunities like this one give us the ability to hopefully develop a relationship with the Baton Rouge community,” said Chief Petty Officer Brian Tolentino, leading chief petty officer of the Navy Ceremonial Guard Charlie Company. “Performing with the Guard helps us to show these kids that there is actually more to the Navy than they think.”
During a Navy Week, outreach events are coordinated with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity organizations in the city.
Navy bands, Navy divers, namesake ship and submarine crews, hometown Sailors, medical personnel, environmental displays, Navy recruiting properties all participate in the Navy Week program.
