“I would say this is a great first marathon for anyone to run,” said Capt. Danielle Pozun, runner, Marine Corps running team. “You will never have this many people cheering you on.”

Throughout the course of the race small checkpoints were filled with Marine and civilian volunteers who would hand out cups of water, oranges and other food items, as well as provided motivation to the runners.

“I know the importance of receiving support when you’re out on an endurance event like the marathon,” said Jack Delaney, volunteer, MCM. “I like giving back and that is why I volunteered, this is definitely something I would do again next year.”

The marathon is a 26.2 mile course that takes place every year in the D.C. area. Throughout the course, runners will see pictures of fallen service members.

“When I got to the 12 mile point I was able to see the faces of all the recent fallen service members and it was very inspiring for me,” said Pozun. “Being able to finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial and to see all the names etched into the statues made me very emotional.

“I will be back next year and the year after that, I will always come back.”

Volunteers for the Marine Corps Marathon showed up anywhere from 3:00 am and 5:00 am to set up tables, water stands and checkpoint before the runners started.

Although the volunteers do the work for the event early in the morning, many volunteers will still look forward to supporting the runners.

“It is grueling work,” said Delaney. “I have already walked six miles today and I have another two miles to get back to my car, but I can rest later. There are people who cannot rest right now.”
