The 114th Fighter Wing held its first Continuity of Operations Plan Exercise at Joe Foss Field, S.D. Oct. 20, 2016. The exercise allowed Airmen to practice accomplishing their mission in the event that part of the base is damaged by a severe weather event.
The COOP exercise has three levels depending on the severity of damage. During the exercise, only the 114th Operations Group practiced relocation of their work environment, which was considered small in severity.
“The COOP is an exercise where we force Airmen to work at an alternate location but still accomplish their mission,” said Senior Master Sgt. Alan Tuschen, 114th Civil Engineer Squadron installation emergency manager.
Members of the group were separated to different locations throughout the base.
Flexibility is key to this exercise. Airmen must continue to work efficiently and maintain continuity while relocating to various around the base.
“Having to relocate throws anyone out of their comfort zone.” said Staff Sgt. Malorie McCarthy, 114th Operations Group aviation resource management specialist. “Having a plan to handle any and all situations is one of our main goals.”
The exercise went smoothly and concluded with F-16s flying sorties in the afternoon uninterrupted.
“We have some changes to make for the next exercise, lessons learned. Overall it went well.” said Tuschen.
