    Story by Timothy Sandland

    102nd Intelligence Wing

OTIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Cape Cod, Mass. - On Tuesday, Oct. 25, the 102nd Intelligence Wing will host a number of high-ranking military and government officials as well as innovators from several high-tech energy companies during a leadership summit focusing on the upcoming Otis Microgrid Project.

Among those attending the summit will be Honorable Miranda Ballentine, the Asst. Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Energy; Lt. Gen. L. Scott Rice, Director of the Air National Guard; and state Rep. David Vieira of the 3rd Barnstable District.

The purpose of the summit will be threefold. First, it will provide a platform for the project team to present the latest plan to senior leaders. As the project was initially conceived at the grass-roots level, the summit is a perfect opportunity for the team to "brief up" the chain. Secondly, it affords opportunities for all interested parties to meet, many for the first time, and network to establish strategic connections and relationships. Finally, it gives leaders at the secretariat-level of the DOD and Air Force an opportunity to convey the appropriate level of awareness and emphasis to efficient energy initiatives and departmental policy - initiatives and policies projects such as the Otis Microgrid intends to implement.

The first of such a broad scope for a DOD installation, the microgrid will provide for an energy capability almost exclusively based on renewable energy while also ensuring a high-level of grid security and will serve as a showcase for DOD, Federal and community experts to learn from. In addition to the real benefits seen here, the microgrid will give the DOD and Department of Energy a solid test bed to better understand energy resilience and security and will serve to educate the agencies through technical and economic studies - likely to impact on capital energy investment strategy for the next 20 years.

"The resilient energy system project at Otis ANG Base is an excellent example of innovative airmen driving mission assurance through energy assurance. The 102nd Intelligence Wing has critical missions requiring uninterrupted access to electricity" Ballentine said. "By integrating renewable energy, advanced energy storage, and innovative controls, this system will provide vital capabilities to our warfighters and intelligence professionals."

The all-day event is open to the media. All media representatives interested in attending must register with the 102nd Intelligence Wing Public Affairs office by calling 508-968-4516 or emailing (preferred) usaf.ma.102-iw.mbx.pa@mail.mil not later than 12:00 p.m., Monday, October 24.

Media will use the Bourne Gate and arrive by 9:00 a.m.
