Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron hosted an Information Fair and Chili Cook Off to bring Marines, Sailors and their families together at the marina on Marine Corps Air Station New River Oct. 7.

The event brought the unit together to interact and learn about the opportunities at their disposal, such as financial advice and career counseling. They also played games and ate food, such as chili and chicken wings.

“I had a good time,” said Cpl. Jaggar Odam, training clerk at H&HS. “I basically played corn hole (the entire time), and we also had a volley ball (net) set up. There were a thousand wings from Wing Zone, so that was pretty nice.”

Marines and Sailors of all ranks attended the event; the senior enlisted personnel built trust and confidence with the junior enlisted. It’s not often it happens at the work place and it helps the junior enlisted with approaching those with higher ranks than their own.

“It gives us the confidence and trust in our higher ranks to actually go up to them and talk to them about anything,” said Lance Cpl. Anthony Contreras, cyber network operator at H&HS.

Events like this only happen two or three times a year due to the unit’s operational tempo. Marines came together and took the time to get to know one another in a relaxed environment which helped build camaraderie amongst the unit.

“This gives them the opportunity to interact,” said Lt. Col. Quentin Vaughn, commanding officer of H&HS. “We have (personnel) all spread out, we’re probably the most dispersed unit on the air station so it’s important to build camaraderie and fellowship.”
