MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - On October 18 at approximately 7:44 p.m. a UH-1Y belonging to III Marine Expeditionary Force struck a wire line in the Tactical Flight Training Area in Northern Oahu.
There were four crew members on board at the time of the incident and all have been reported safe without injury.
Initial media reports erroneously labeled this as a “hard landing”. However, the pilots executed a controlled precautionary emergency landing approximately two kilometers south of Sunset Beach onto private property.
The amount of damage to this UH-1Y, commonly referred to as a Huey, will be determined after a complete inspection is performed. Currently, it is still in the location of its precautionary emergency landing undergoing an initial damage assessment. It will not be moved until the assessment is complete.
The aircraft was performing a regularly scheduled flight in an authorized training area.
Police officers from Honolulu Police Department are assisting with site security and traffic control in cooperation with Marine Aircraft Group 24.
The Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc states this incident did not result in service interruption to their customers.
The incident is currently under investigation.
