Food Network take notice, Soldiers assigned to 6th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 35th ADA Brigade competed in a Mobile Kitchen Trailer cook-off competition Oct. 14 at Suwon Air Base, Republic of Korea.

Deputy Commanding General of Sustainment for Eighth Army Maj. Gen. Tammy Smith highlighted the panel of judges that also included the 35th ADA Brigade command team, the 6-52 ADA Battalion command team and the most junior Soldier assigned to the Iron Horse Battalion.

“The idea behind the event was a collaborative effort between the battalion command team, the headquarters and headquarters battery command team and the dining facility managers,” said 1st Sgt. Kellen Rowley. “The intent was to showcase our food service specialists, sometimes our low density MOSs don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

The teams were comprised of food service specialists that feed over 750 service members at the Iron Horse Dining Facility at Suwon Air Base every day. With only 15 Soldiers, the group is close and operates as one team to ensure their Soldiers are fed well with plenty of options.

Staff Sgt. Quincy Spivey’s team plated beef bulgogi marinated in teriyaki and soy sauce, shrimp fried rice garnished with a sliced fried egg, and a colorful side of steamed vegetables. For dessert, they added a white chocolate brownie covered in white chocolate with a chocolate drizzle.

“Although it was a competition, it was all done in fun and a great team effort,” said Spivey. “It was a great platform for our junior Soldiers to get more familiar with the MKT.”

Staff Sgt. Kevin Church’s team prepared grilled chicken with a creamy mushroom sauce, mustard rosemary potatoes with a warm salsa, and sautéed green beans topped with candied walnuts. They served pineapple upside-down cake that was singled out by Smith as her favorite dish of the day.

After the last bite was consumed, each judge cheerfully described their favorite dishes before casting their vote. For some, the scoring was so close the difference came down to a half-point to determine a winner.

When the final tally came in, it was Team Spivey that took the cake. Soldiers from the winning team were awarded the Army Achievement Medal presented by Maj. Gen. Smith. While each member of Team Church received coins presented by Smith, the 35th ADA Brigade command team and the 6-52 ADA Battalion command team.
