Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Installation – West is conducting Exercise Vigilant Shield, Oct. 17-21.
Vigilant Shield is a U.S. Northern Command, command-level training event designed to train staff at multiple levels in Homeland Defense and Homeland Security missions.
“We are simulating a variety of scenarios that represent the most likely threats and actions modern extremists might perpetrate on MCIWEST- Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton,” Lt. Col. William Chronister, Director, Operations and Plans Division G-3/5.
This exercise will present the command with the opportunity to prepare for and respond to acts of terrorism.
“We are testing and evaluating our crisis response teamwork, as well as our command and control infrastructure and methods,” said Chronister. “Further, we are harmonizing our collective efforts across all of our sections and responsibilities.”
Each day of the exercise will present new scenarios throughout MCI-West to test each command’s capabilities and mission readiness. This acts as a practice in command and control between Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, MCAS Miramar, MCAS Yuma and Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow.
These scenarios include finding a weapons and explosive cache in a vehicle near MCAS Yuma and raising Camp Pendleton’s Force Protection Condition to FPCON Charlie. This Force Protection Condition is implemented when an incident has occurred or terrorist action is imminent.
“Today’s world contains numerous threats against Marines and Marine Corps Installations,” Chronister. “We must consistently exercise our abilities to deal with crises: we hope we never have to exercise these capabilities in a real-world scenario, but if called upon, we will be ready with an immediate and appropriate response.”
The exercise focuses on preparing the installations, protecting its people and its critical infrastructure from terrorist threats.
