TN Air Guardsmen compete for Mr. Sumner County title

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Two Tennessee Air National Guard Airmen from the 118th Wing in Nashville, Tenn., are competing for the title of “Mr. Sumner County” this month, which is scheduled to be awarded on November 5 at Foxland Harbor in Hendersonville, Tenn.

This is the second Mr. Sumner County pageant and it will raise funds for Mary’s Magical Place, a nonprofit created to build an all inclusive playground catering to special needs children, as well as their families and friends. The pageant is hosted by the Junior Service League of Hendersonville.

The nonprofit is near and dear to the Airmen of the 118th because it was created and named in honor of Mary McAuley. She passed away in 2015 and is the daughter of pageant contestant Tommy McAuley, a Senior Master Sergeant with the Air National Guard unit.

The pageant is being conducted by the JSL of Hendersonville, a volunteer organization for women that began in 2015.

“They aim to elevate the community through volunteerism and a spirit of humanity,” McAuley explained.

Each contestant was asked to participate by one of the committee members.

McAuley quickly became the first person to enter as a contestant thanks to a little convincing from his wife, Rachel.

“It was her idea to sign me up,” he said. “It’s outside of my comfort zone, but it will be a lot of fun.”

So far, there are ten contestants in the running for the honorary title including fellow Air National Guardsman Chief Master Sgt. Nick Rogers, the chief of the mission support group in Nashville.

“It was a no brainer to do this,” said Rogers. “Not only is it a way to give back to my community, it also honors a family member of our own because all of us in the 118th Wing are family.”

“This is bigger than us, and I am honored to be a part of it,” Rogers added.

The contestant who raises the most money will be named the winner.
“Mr. Sumner County is designed to be fun and create lasting friendships with the other contestants. I’ve never done anything like this, but I’m looking forward to raising money for my daughter’s playground,” said McAuley.
