SAVANNAH, Ga., October 10, 2016. – Since Hurricane Matthew impacted Georgia’s coastal counties, Georgia Guardsmen have worked with first responders from Saint Marys to Savannah clearing debris, ensuring public safety and helping pave the way for residents to return home.

Between missions, one might expect Guardsmen to relax, take a break or catch up on social media. But Guardsmen of the Companies A and B of the 2nd Battalion 121st Infantry Regiment used the time to entertain children and families who were being reintegrated at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.

“Again…again!,” one little girl yelled after receiving a piggy back ride from a Soldier. He was breathing heavily but had a big smile on his face. It wasn’t long before he took yet another hasty stroll down the pathway. The children appeared to be having so much fun that one would hardly believe Hurricane Matthew had displaced their families’ just days before.

“We’ve been working hand-in-hand to support the citizens of GA with the Red Cross,” said Captain Matthew Silva, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment. “You can definitely tell the citizens really appreciate it and I know my Soldiers really appreciate this opportunity to give back to the community that give so much back to them.”

Since October 6, units of the Georgia Army National Guard have conducted missions throughout impacted regions along Georgia's coast. Before arriving at the trade center, one of Alpha Company’s missions included assisting Bryan County with reconnaissance to identify downed power lines, road hazards and assist with debris removal. Upon identifying hazards, Guardsmen would report the location to civil authorities.

“It’s been really good,” said Staff Sergeant David Turner, Company B, 2nd Bn. 121st Inf. Rgt. “We’ve been able to help a lot of people. This is a new experience. I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m very happy we’re able to provide assistance.”

They also assisted the Savannah Police Department with traffic management as citizens returned to Chatham County on Sunday.

“I feel great. I get a lot of gratification out of being able to help people and it’s great to see positive impacts from my Soldiers helping these citizens,” Silva said.
