ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The top three weapons load crews in the 48th Maintenance Group raced against each other, and the clock, during a quarterly load crew competition at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, Oct. 6.
Airmen representing the 492nd, 493rd and 494th Aircraft Maintenance Units competed to load ammunitions onto F-15C Eagle and F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft. Airmen were judged on their dress and appearance, technical knowledge, a tool kit inspection and the weapons load itself.
“By competing against each other, the Airmen get to see who the safest and most reliable teams are,” said Chief Master Sgt. Christine Beaudion, 48th MXG wing weapons manager.
In attendance were wing leadership, as well as members of the 48th MXG to cheer on their peers and teammates.
“It’s a way to gain prestige within the maintenance group,” said Tech. Sgt. Justin Medige, 48th Weapons Standardization Section load crew member.
The winning team not only receives bragging rights, but each team member obtains a plaque and their AMU gets a trophy to showcase their victory.
“Airmen get the [opportunity] to show off to their peers, as well as wing leadership,” said Beaudion. “It also prepares them for when they go down-range.”
The winning team will be decided after examiners calculate scores from their dress and appearance, technical test, tool kit inspection and ability to load the ammunition to the aircraft.
The defending champion is the 492nd Aircraft Maintenance Unit.
